Home for AIDS Orphans

Good evening everyone!

We are going to have an exciting meeting on Thursday! We are going to give out our Teachers Mini Grants and we will also be having our Octorber students of the month! and last but not least our wonderful guest speaker Paula. She will be speaking to us about Home for AIDS Orphans. So please join us at 7:30 am sharp. Thank you!!

Paula is a Southern California native and was born in Glendale and went to Aviation High School and El Camino College.  Paula has lived in Australia, Brazil, and San Pedro (1990-1995), and in 2003, Africa.  Paula joined the Rotary Club of Livingstone in 2009, serving as Secretary for two years (2011-2013), President (2013-2014) and since 2014, International Projects Chair.  

Paula has had many volunteer work since 2003, including working with primates.  In 2007, she and her late husband Dan Van Zyl joined the United Church of Zambia as mission partners and started building traditional homes for the elderly caregivers who were taking care of their families’ AIDS orphans.  To date, they have competed 190 homes. This part of Zambia is rich in customs and traditions and do not believe in orphanages so when parents pass away, almost always due to AIDS, the children are left to the nearest living relative who are very poor and cannot build a home for the larger family.   We started a high school sponsorship program for a couple of years then went on to sponsor college students with the help of international donors including Rotarians; this program is ongoing, and has been a great success. 

In 2015, my husband and I started a nonprofit organization called Home for AIDS Orphans AND Started building a community school.  Volunteers come from all over the world to work on the projects which is year-long.  We take a break in October when it gets too hot. 

I live in Mwandi all year with my 4 dogs, many volunteers coming and going and at times a monkey.
